Today at the White House President Obama formally nominated Sylvia Mathews Burwell as Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Director, Ernest Moniz as Secretary of Energy and Gina McCarthy as EPA Administrator.
Burwell is currently head of the charitable Wal-Mart Foundation after serving in a similar role for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s global development program. She also has extensive experience in Washington highlighted by a stint as Deputy Chief of Staff for President Clinton and Chief of Staff for Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin.
Ernest J. Moniz is Co-Chair of the Research Council, Director of the Energy Initiative and Director of the Laboratory for Energy and the Environment at MIT. Moniz was Associate Director for Science in the Office of Science and Technology Policy in the Clinton Administration. He also served as Undersecretary of Energy during Clinton’s second term.
Prior to joining the Obama administration Gina McCarthy was head of the Connecticut Dept. of Environmental Protection. She currently serves as Assistant Administrator in charge of the EPA’s Office of Air and Radiation. Environmental groups believe that the selection of McCarthy is a signal that President Obama is serious about tackling climate change in his second term.
