U.S. Manufacturing Technology Consumption Falls in July

July U.S. manufacturing technology consumption totaled $303.44 million, according to AMTDA, the American Machine Tool Distributors’ Association, and AMT - The Association for Manufacturing Technology. This total, as reported by companies participating in the USMTC program, was down 21.5% from June but up 5.7% from the total of $287.02 million reported for July 2007.

Fuel Prices Squeeze Profit Margins for U.S. Manufacturers

Harry Kazazian built his business on sleeping bags that are made in China and shipped across the ocean to the United States, but he realized recently that the math doesn't work anymore.

With fuel prices at record highs, the cost of sending a standard 40-foot container of goods has gone from $3,000 in 2000 to about $8,000 today, squeezing profit.

Unemployment Rate Jumps to Five-Year High

The jobless rate was 6.1 percent last month, up from 5.7 percent in July, the Labor Department said today. It is the highest unemployment rate in five years, and compares to joblessness of 4.1 percent one year ago.

U.S. Builds Case Against China's Export Curbs

U.S. trade officials are close to filing a case against China at the World Trade Organization, challenging export restrictions on raw materials used in steelmaking and other industries.

The U.S. has been working on the case intensely for the past few months, and could move ahead with a request for consultations - the first step in the WTO dispute settlement process - within weeks, according to people close to the discussions.

Factory Orders, Capital Spending Rise

Factory orders climbed more than expected during July, and a barometer of capital spending by businesses surged.

Orders for manufactured goods increased 1.3%, following a revised 2.1% increase in June, the Commerce Department said Wednesday.
