U.S. Adds 136,000 Jobs, Unemployment Rate at 50-Year Low

The unemployment rate declined 0.2% to 3.5% in September and total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 136,000, the U.S. Department of Labor reported. The 3.5% figure is the lowest since December of 1969. Employment in health care and in professional and business services continued to trend up. The manufacturing sector was quiet in September in terms of hiring.
