Summer Issue Preview: SIL, Pulp & Paper and more

Valve end users and manufacturers are often responsible for equipment to be used in Safety Instrumented Systems, but because they have little background in instrumentation, they don’t understand how or why a process is designated a Safety Integrity Level (SIL) application. In the summer issue of Valve Magazine, mailing mid-July, Mike Mitchell from Cameron Flow Control explains how SIL came to be and how it is applied.

Also coming is another in our series of “Where Valves Are Used,” and this time we’re covering the pulp & paper business. This industry has seen some tough times in recent years, but because the products touch everyday human life, it will remain an important process industry. Today’s mills and those that supply to the mills are using new technologies and methodologies to increase profitability and productivity. Velan’s Harlan Dunk examines how today’s mills operate and where valves fit into the picture.

And look for articles on Cryogenic and Fire Testing, Solenoid Valves, Wastewater Treatment, Hydraulic Actuators, Technology Tools and more.

Nuclear Slowdown Related to Natural Gas Prices

Natural gas prices will have more of an effect on the fate of the U.S. nuclear renaissance than the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, according to a report by John Egan of Industrial Information Resources. He based his comments on statements made by a panel of experts at a recent Web conference. As John Herron, president, chief executive and chief nuclear officer at Entergy Nuclear, put it: “I don’t believe the nuclear renaissance is dead, but with natural gas costing $4 to $4.50 per million British thermal units, it is difficult to justify investing in a new-build nuclear plant.”

Learn what others have to say about the role that low natural gas prices are having on future nuclear activities on the Valve Magazine website.
