A Universal View of an Earthly Industry
When asked if building a successful company and gaining wealth was something about which he was proud, AK Velan responded this way. “When I was young, I studied the theory and life of Albert Einstein. I liked his philosophy: The worth of a man stands in his capacity to give, not in his capacity to take. Who you are, your successes in life, what others recognize are important if you share. Otherwise, all this is worthless.”
Wise words shared by an interesting man whose combined interest in cosmology and engineering set the stage for a long and colorful career. Velan’s exceptional profile is shared as part of VALVE Magazine’s Anniversary series interviewing long-time members of the VMA. MORE

Issues in Leak Detection
The well-publicized deteriorating condition of the nation's water infrastructure means water facilities are looking for better ways to detect leaks before they happen. One new system several major U.S. water works facilities are using sends out and receives acoustic signals to find places in a pipe where walls have grown particularly thin. The system is a non-invasive way to isolate the leak so that a wide area of equipment does not have to be replaced.
Where to Find U.S. and Canadian Suppliers
The Valve Manufacturers Association of America offers a number of ways to gather information about U.S. and Canadian manufacturers of valves, actuators and controls, and related flow control equipment and services.
The association’s official website, VMA.org, provides a starting point for your search. Look for the Product Finder in the navigation bar. You’ll see two choices: Valves, Actuators & Controls and Supplies/Services (foundries, gaskets, etc.). Each Product Finder includes the ability to search by Product Type, End-user Industry, or Company Name. All companies included are members of VMA.
Also available is the North American Catalog of Valves, which provides information about every member company, along with a Product Matrix and articles about the valve industry. The catalog can be ordered through The VMA Store.
Another resource is the ValveIndustryBuyersGuide.com. Hundreds of companies throughout the U.S. and Canada are included, from manufacturers to distributors to valve repair firms, with nearly 100 different product types. When using this resource, be sure to look for the VMA and VRC (Valve Repair Council) logos, which indicate those companies that are members of the association or council.
