A Twist of Fate Leads to a Long Career

"Our business is all about people,” says Gil Richards, chairmen emeritus of Richards Industries. "Choose good people, keep them happy, have good management, and the results and profits will follow. It’s a no-nonsense industry, with many high-quality people.” It’s no wonder, then, that Richards spent more than 50 years in the industry he loves despite finding his career almost by accident, claiming "it was just fate.”  MORE

Canadian Oil Production to More than Double by 2030

The uncertainty around new pipelines does not seem to be having any negative effect on the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers' forecast of crude oil production. The trade association said it expects crude oil output to hit 6.7 million barrels per day by 2030. That is 500,000 barrels per day more than the group forecast in 2012.  MORE

According to the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), the sequester cuts will lead to a loss of more than 130,000 manufacturing jobs in the coming years, peaking in 2014, and push the unemployment rate up 0.7%. These lost jobs will be dispersed over both large manufacturers and smaller companies along the supply chain. MORE

Emergency Shutdown Valves for Shale Gas

North America has become the leading producer of natural gas thanks to the prevalence of shale gas sources. However, this industry brings its own set of challenges because of concerns about the effects on the environment and the need to find the safest ways to get the gas. Emergency shutdown equipment, including valves and their automation, are vital to the picture. This issue explores what’s used and why.

Valve Basics Online Training Program to Debut Late Summer

By the end of 2013, VMA projects that nearly 1,000 people will have attended one of the association’s Valves & Actuators 101 seminars, which launched in late 2009. While that is a formidable number, there are many thousands of individuals in the U.S., Canada and around the world who would benefit from this entry-level training, but are unable to attend one of the live seminars. With the launch of VMA’s new VBOT (Valve Basics Online Training) in late August, this popular course will be available to all, 24/7.

The program consists of individual lessons on the following topics: overview of the industry; multi-turn, check, quarter-turn and pressure-relief valves; actuators—pneumatic & hydraulic and electric; and control valves & systems. Each lesson ends with a short quiz, and once a certain number of questions are answered correctly, the program allows the user to move on to the next lesson. Upon completion, a certificate of completion is awarded.

In addition to selling individual licenses to the online 101 course, VMA plans to offer group licenses at a reduced cost.
