Exchanging Ideas at Emerson Event
Besides being a source of valuable information about products, processes and business practices, events like the Emerson Global Exchange are a great chance to network and learn from business leaders. A highlight of the exchange held the first week of October was the keynote address by Mark Thompson, CEO and cofounder of Virgin Unite Mentors who said, “Leaders must be willing to realize that success is all about the people they’re working with. We can never succeed just on our own. And you must balance relentless creativity and fanatical discipline with humility; you have to admit when you’re wrong and be willing to make it right.” Valuable advice to which leaders of all persuasions should listen! Global GDP Forecast Downgraded by IMF
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) slightly downgraded its estimates of worldwide output for this year and next. They now forecast an increase of 2.9% this year, down from the 3.2% estimate predicted three months ago, mostly attributable to some deceleration in emerging economies in Asia, Russia, Latin America and the Middle East. It also reflects a marginal downgrade in the U.S. forecast. MORE

MARKET OUTLOOK: Use 2014 To Get Ready for Good Times Ahead
As it did at the 2013 Market Outlook event, the boom in natural gas dominated discussions at this year’s event held in San Diego in August. While the overall message was positive, there are still bumps on the road to recovery from the recession, and Alan Beaulieu of the Institute for Trend Research repeated his warning that there will be another mild recession in the latter part of 2014. Most presenters were optimistic about the gradual climb out of the recession, however, and were pinning hopes for a resurgence in the manufacturing, hydrocarbon and petrochemical industries on the growth in unconventional oil and gas. Wireless Valve Monitoring
In a conventional automation system and typical process plant infrastructure it is difficult to monitor all valves at all times. Complex systems are needed and many valves go un-monitored, creating the potential for problems that can occur when valves are left incorrectly open, closed or partially closed. While traditional valve monitoring systems include many wires to connect all sensors, instruments, control panels and valves, wireless valve monitoring means easier engineering and installation, faster commissioning and startup, smaller footprint, reduced maintenance, improved efficiency and safety.
