Emission Standards, Innovation and Safety Highlight 2014 Technical Seminar
VMA’s 2014 Technical Seminar & Exhibits, held March 6 and 7, focused on fugitive emissions and provided a broad view of the issues with which the valve industry is challenged. Keynote speaker Ken Garing of the EPA opened the event and many of the presentations focused on the recently implemented new standards and how to correct problems in a timely and efficient manner. New and better ways of testing for emissions were also shared, and the new oil & gas industry supply chain standards were introduced along with the recently revealed API monogram program. MORE

Oil & Gas Industry: $10B for Valves in 2015
For the first time, the upstream oil and gas industry will invest more than $10B for valves in a single year. In 2015, the expenditure will be $10.3B. This includes valves purchased for oil & gas extraction and those used in unconventional extraction such as from subsea shale and oil sands. The forecast also includes valves used in LNG and gas-to-liquids plants. MORE

MANUFACTURING & THE ECONOMY
Could Federal Agencies Redefine Manufacturing?
Federal agencies are weighing a proposal to change the definition of U.S. manufacturers to include factoryless goods producers, “firms that handle every part of making their products except the actual fabrication.” The proposed change “could affect everything from the monthly jobs report to producer inflation figures,” which supporters of the measure say “is simply driven by a desire to properly account for the effects of globalization.” MORE

Repairers Beware: EPA Clean Air Requirements will Affect You
Valves used in places where emissions are a concern must be qualification tested and verified to meet the 100 ppm maximum leakage rate requirement. Whether new or old, after testing verifies that the packing itself is compliant under the API RP622 test, the packing can be inserted into a valve and tested again to meet the standards of API 624. That’s fine for new valves, but what about repaired or post-manufactured, modified valves? The design tolerances of those valves may be long gone. MORE

Shale Oil: Can the U.S. be a Net Exporter?
With U.S. demand falling due to conservation efforts and economic factors, domestic oil producers want to diversify their markets and increase their reach abroad. But biggest among the concerns surrounding this is, how much oil can actually be produced? Can U.S. oil production ever be expected to exceed U.S. consumption? Some analysts say yes, and that a vibrant export market could actually spur production and make North America essentially self-sufficient in oil.
VMA Distributor Membership Grows
The Valve Manufacturers Association (VMA) has just added its fifth distributor/channel partner member. Last year, the VMA membership overwhelmingly approved a change in the VMA bylaws to expand the Associate Membership category to include a distributors/channel partners serving the industrial valve, actuator and control industry, if they meet certain criteria. Five companies have joined under this new category: Classic Controls, DistributionNOW (NOV Wilson), MRC Global, Setpoint Integrated Systems and Sunbelt Supply.
For information on joining as distributor/channel partner member, as well as other types of membership, please go to VMA.org > About VMA.
