Accolades for Valve Basics Seminar

A primarily young crowd of more than 60 men and women representing all facets of the industry came to VMA's Valve Basics Seminar & Exhibits in San Antonio, Oct. 21-23, and gave the educational program strong ratings. Every participant turning in an evaluation indicated they would recommend the course to their colleagues. On a scale of 1 to 5, the Valve Petting Zoo received a 4.9, with comments indicating it was an invaluable addition to the program. One of several graduate M.E. students who attended wrote, "This event was fantastic for students!" A young valve professional employed as an account manager said, "I wish I could have gone to this when I first started...great speakers, great content."

The 3-day Valves, Actuators and Controls 101 and 201 course will next be offered April 19-21 in Rosemont (Chicago), IL, and Oct. 18-20 in Houston. Registration for the April event opens in January.  MORE

Low-Temperature Sealing with Elastomers in Sour Gas

The performance of the seals in a valve is often the limiting factor in a valve’s performance; knowing the effects of low temperature and sour gas on elastomers is critical in oil and gas valve applications. The limitations for elastomers that will determine a successful seal in a valve often include properties such as oil resistance along with high and low temperature performance. MORE

A Stormy Market Outlook for 2016

Declining oil prices made it into most discussions at the annual VMA Market Outlook Workshop held in August. For the most part, the mood of speakers was that while the U.S. economy is in fairly good shape, pressures from declining oil prices and cheap gas, uncertainties over economies of other countries and lessening demand possibilities from China are creating a future that’s difficult to predict. MORE

Utilities, Infrastructure and Cybersecurity

Protecting our critical infrastructure from cyberattacks is critical. According to a speaker at a recent cybersecurity conference in Canada: “This is not a national issue; the grids are interconnected. The U.S. and Canada share power. Imagine trying to survive and recoup from a concerted cyberattack on infrastructure.” This article will share some of the most important steps utilities and manufacturers can take.
