The Center Will Hold

In 1919 the poet W.B. Yeats wrote The Second Coming, which described postwar Europe using this oft-repeated phrase: “Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold.” Yeats apparently never experienced the strength and fortitude of Texans. If he had, he’d see that their center is far too strong to fail.

Houston is often called the heart of the valve universe. Many of those in the industry are currently experiencing conditions that dramatically affect their lives and livelihoods—and will continue to do so in the days and months to come. Please know that all of us at the Valve Manufacturers Association and VALVE Magazine are sending our thoughts and prayers to you for the speediest possible recovery from this once-in-a-1,000-years event. If there is anything we can do to assist, or if you have stories or photos you’d like to share, please contact editor This email address is being protected from spambots. When released from a high-pressure area to a low-pressure area, pooled condensate can flash, resulting in extreme pressure spikes, audible banging noises, valve and steam line failure, corrosion and even full equipment failure. MORE

Remote Monitoring in Cooling Towers and Air-Cooled Heat Exchangers

Manual measuring is time consuming and can be inaccurate, and generally cannot be used for displaying trends, which are more accurate measurements of the health of the tower. With only occasional monitoring, it would be easy to miss an intermittent malfunction in a valve or a vibration that could indicate corrosion. MORE
