Market Outlook for 2017: Sluggish Growth with a Focus on New Realities

While the current uptick in the economy is good news to all industries, continued low oil prices and political unpredictability are making it difficult to get financing for projects, according to speakers at the 2016 VMA Market Outlook workshop in San Diego last August. This is especially true in the water and wastewater infrastructure and chemical processing markets.

Ceramic Coatings Provide Corrosion and Wear Protection for Valves

Ceramic coatings extend the in-service life of equipment by enhancing the corrosion and wear resistance of the base material. Because of this, they are often applied to protect metal-seated ball valves (MSBVs) used for tough chemical applications like turning rock into gold or nickel using processes such as hydrometallurgy.

The Role of Valves in HAZOP Studies

Process hazard analysis (PHA) is required by U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations, as indicated in Code of Federal Regulation (CFR), 29CFR, Standard number 1910.119, Process Safety Management (PSM) of Highly Hazardous Chemicals. This section of the standard contains requirements for preventing or minimizing the consequences of catastrophic release of toxic, reactive, flammable or explosive chemicals. Such releases can result in hazards from toxicity, fire or explosion. A PHA identifies and evaluates potential hazards and risks to safety, health and the environment, and identifies safeguards and additional corrective measures to improve safety.

What Internal Best Practices Can Do for Valve Selection

As time goes by, technology moves forward, lessons are learned and industry requirements evolve. Personnel come and go, and facilities are bought and sold. The by-products of this evolution are changes to both industry best practices and corporate requirements.
