pipesvalveswebThe Valve Manufacturers Association held its annual Technical Seminar & Exhibits at the Hilton NASA Clear Lake in Houston, March 8-9. More than a dozen speakers presented on a variety of topics that centered on “Prevailing Challenges and Solutions for the Oil & Gas/Petrochemical Industries.” Following is the next article in this series.

David Bayreuther, vice president of engineering, Metso Automation USA, is a member of the U.S. team of experts working on revision of ISO-15484 and is also participating on a task force developing new API fugitive emissions standards. He presented a comprehensive analysis of the current state of affairs, starting his discussion saying, “We are nowhere near close to an industry-wide solution.”

Qualification Standards on Performance Type Testing

More than a dozen speakers presented on a variety of topics that centered on “Prevailing Challenges and Solutions for the Oil & Gas/Petrochemical Industries.”

Ron Manson, director of application engineering for Cameron Valves and Measurement, spoke about the qualification standards on performance type testing for valves used top side and in facilities. With 34 years in the valve industry, Manson’s experience gives him firsthand knowledge of how the complex and often conflicting requirements national and company specifications affect valve manufacturers.

Evaluating Standard Class Valve Castings

evaluating standard class valve castings 1Why is there a need for a new casting standard? That's the question asked-and answered-by Greg Johnson, president of Houston-based United Valve, during a presentation at VMA's Technical Seminar on March 3. Johnson discussed a "Proposed Specification for Evaluating Standard Class Valve Castings."

"A lot of new foundries are being built, some in new countries, and the paradigm is changing almost daily," Johnson observed. "Right now most foundries are in China and India, but in five years, who knows? There could be a shift to another country."

Rationalizing Valve Specifying Through Modern Data Methods

rationalizing valve specifying through modern data methodsOne of the presentations at the Aramco Services Company Technical Exchange Meeting in Houston in early May was entitled “Improving the Value Chain for Valves through Standardization of Metadata.” In it the presenters—Sharon Bickford, project manager at FIATECH; Ken Hamilton, project manager at PIP; Rick Hoenerhoff, associate director at PIP; and John Fish, who works in the area of customer relationships & quality assurance for Ford, Bacon, and Davis, LLC —pointed out that the process for managing valves on a project has not changed in 40 years.
