EPA Methane Emissions Fee Likely Overturned with Resolution

Both houses of the U.S. Congress have voted to overturn the EPA’s charge on methane emissions for facilities that emit more than 25,000 tons per year of carbon dioxide and methane. The Waste Emissions Charge (WEC) was part of the approach to capturing methane emissions from oil and gas operations and other petrochemical operations. The fees started at $900 USD per metric ton of methane emitted in 2024 and increased to $1200 for 2025, with $1500 planned for 2026 and beyond, and were part of the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act. It is expected to be signed and enacted soon.
